Margaret Felker
Margaret Felker is the co-founder and co-director, alongside her husband Mike Byrd, of David’s Educational Opportunity Fund (DEOF). DEOF is a nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive support to low-income university students in Quito, Ecuador, in honor of their son David Byrd-Felker, who disappeared near Zamora in 2002. Maggie is now retired. She spent many years working as a hospital nurse, caring for surgical patients, children, and new mothers with their newborns. She also worked with hospice patients, visiting them in their homes. Most recently, before retiring in 2017, she worked as a school nurse in elementary schools in Madison, Wisconsin. Her life changed dramatically on the night of August 12, 2002, when she was waiting for her son David at Chicago O'Hare Airport, but he did not disembark the plane. Over the past 22 years, Maggie and her husband left their jobs in the U.S. and did volunteer work at the Centro del Muchacho Trabajador in Quito. They established David’s Fund in 2012, starting with 6 students; DEOF now supports over 40 members. Maggie also became a grandmother in 2012, thanks to her daughter Rachel and her husband Josué. She divides her time between her grandchildren and her DEOF family. In her testimony, Maggie, with the theme "Brotherhood Redeemed in Christ," will discuss the role faith and fraternity played during various stages of her “new life” since 2002. It is a story full of hope.
