Authorities from the Catholic Church estimate that 30,000 people will participate in the 53rd International Eucharistic Congress. Pope Francis will not attend.

Under the theme “Brotherhood to Heal the World,” Ecuador will host the 53rd International Eucharistic Congress in Quito.

The event will take place from September 8 to 15, 2024, with the presence of 53 international delegations.

Juan Carlos Garzón, Secretary General of the Congress, highlighted the significance of the event, noting that Ecuador becomes the fourth country in South America to host one of the most important gatherings in the Catholic world.

During the eight days of the Congress, the Catholic Church will organize exhibitions, talks, and discussions aimed at promoting Christian importance and values.

Garzón previewed three key events of the Congress: the opening on September 8; the closing on September 15; and a procession through the streets of the Historic Center to the Basílica del Voto Nacional on September 14.

“We expect around 30,000 people to attend the Congress. It will be a great event, although Pope Francis will not come due to health issues,” Garzón said.

Fabián Baquero, a representative from Quito Turismo, mentioned that the Municipality is working on the arrangements for the religious celebration.

“There will be road closures, extended restaurant hours, and extended Metro service,” he said.

Garzón added that the Congress will be open to everyone who wishes to participate, including those who do not profess the Catholic faith.
