Preparation for the Procession Advances with Lay Movements

Written by: Génesis Almeida Galarza

With great anticipation, lay movements are preparing to participate in the procession of the International Eucharistic Congress 2024 (IEC 2024), which will take place on September 14. This manifestation of popular religiosity will be one of the most prominent activities, bringing together thousands of faithful in a demonstration of faith and fraternity.

On July 10, at the Santísima Trinidad parish in Quito, Monsignor Maximiliano Ordoñez, Auxiliary Bishop of Quito, met with volunteers involved in creating the flower carpets to finalize details about the preparation of this floral symbol. The meeting also covered logistical and technical aspects of the procession, including the route, stations, and other details.

Approximately 60 representatives from lay movements, pastoral groups, schools, and universities participated in the meeting. They will be responsible for creating the flower carpets, which will cover about one and a half kilometers of the procession route. A total of 107 carpets will mark the path of the Eucharistic procession, from Plaza de San Francisco to the Basílica del Voto Nacional.

During the meeting, volunteers were briefed on the process of creating the carpets, which will be designed around the themes of the Eucharist and fraternity, the central focus of the Congress. The creation of the floral decorations will begin at noon on September 14. For this activity, the Metropolitan Transit Agency (AMT) will prepare a mobility plan considering the procession’s duration and the areas it will cover. Additionally, collection centers for carpet materials and waste management will be set up.
