Holy See Press Office reports on progress at IEC 2024

At a press conference held on Monday, May 20, at the facilities of the Holy See Press Office, progress in the organization of the 53rd International Eucharistic Congress was reported.

“Ecuador is the first country in the world to be consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, for this reason the Pope chose it to be the headquarters of this Congress, which promotes the experience of the Holy Eucharist and universal brotherhood” indicated Monsignor Alfredo José Espinoza Mateus, SDB., Archbishop of Quito and Primate of Ecuador, who also mentioned the need to build a better world together, being sowers of hope.

The social impact of the Eucharist was another topic addressed during the press conference in which Father Juan Carlos Garzón, general secretary of the IEC 2024, referred to the content of the Base Document. “From Quito-Ecuador, a city located in the middle of the world, we will unite to reflect from a Eucharistic and fraternal perspective on issues related to economy, culture, politics, health, digital media, among others,” he said, while recalling the importance to put aside the throw-away society.

Father Corrado Maggioni, president of the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses, gave a brief summary of the history of these important ecclesial meetings, which reflect the universality of the Eucharist and seek to contribute to being a ferment of peace in the world and in this particularly, in Latin America.

At noon (Rome time), the Vatican announced that the Holy Father has appointed Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life, as his Pontifical Delegate for the IEC 2024.
