Archbishop delivered the IEC2024 Base Document to the Mayor of Quito

The Archbishop of Quito, Mons. Alfredo José Espinoza Mateus, sdb, delivered to the Mayor of the Metropolitan District of Quito (DMQ), Ec. Pabel Muñoz, the Base Document of the International Eucharistic Congress (IEC2024). The delivery of the document, which will provide “theological, pastoral and missionary foundation” to Congress, was done this Wednesday, March 13, during a press conference offered by the DMQ and the Archdiocese of Quito to present the “Quiteña Holy Week.”

Bishop Alfredo Espinoza stressed that this year’s Holy Week will have a special touch, because it will be held around the theme of the International Eucharistic Congress “Fraternity to heal the world” in light of the biblical quote “You are all brothers.” (Mt 23, 8).

On the other hand, he revealed that on March 25, all the country’s cathedrals will carry out the renewal of the Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, within the framework of the 150th anniversary of this important historical event for Ecuador.

Quito will host the International Eucharistic Congress

The mayor of Quito, Pabel Muñoz, stressed that 2024 “will be a fundamental year” because the city of Quito will host the 53rd International Eucharistic Congress from September 8 to 15. According to him, she said, “Holy Week will be a ‘warm-up’ for that wonderful event that we will have in the capital city and that will host the Catholic Church from around the world.”

The Base Document of the IEC2024, which was delivered to the Mayor of Quito, “will favor the pastoral activity of our ecclesial jurisdictions and is addressed to all the faithful, who, by reading and deepening this document, will be able to find fundamental elements to favor the gift of fraternity in his own life and in the daily life of his existence.”

Holy Week Quito

In relation to the activities that will be carried out in DMQ around the “Holy Week Quiteña”, the Mayor added that 16 events will be held, some of them will be: the Palm Sunday procession, on March 24 , in the historical center; on Monday, March 25 in the Basilica of the National Vow, at 6:00 p.m., the renewal of the Consecration of Ecuador to the Sacred Heart of Jesus; on Wednesday, March 27, at 4:00 p.m., in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Quito, the Review of the Holy Cross (Arrastre de Caudas); on Thursday the 28th at the Basilica of the National Vote the Procession of Light; On Friday, March 29, in the Center and South of Quito, from 12:00 p.m., the Jesús del Gran Poder procession, among others.

Additionally, he reported that the “Holy Week Quiteña” programming includes cultural activities, such as the XXII International Festival of Sacred Music, which will be held from March 13 to 24; Also the gastronomic festival and the contest ‘Sustainable Fanesca, from the field to the table’, in the convent of San Francisco. Likewise, he pointed out that in the different parishes of the Metropolitan District of Quito a series of programs will be carried out on the occasion of the Holy Week of the Catholic Church.
